Using Multiple E-Mail Addresses
The Computer Works uses Barracuda Networks' award winning Spam Firewall appliances to block an average of 91% of all spam sent to our users. It quarantines another 2-3% of messages directed to our users. This dramatically reduces the amount of spam that actually ends up in our users' mailboxes. It does not eliminate 100% of spam. The only way to reliably block all spam is to block all e-mail, good or bad. Most people don't want that.
Blocking spam is one side of an ever-escalating arms race. The good guys build better blocking methods and the bad guys keep finding alternate methods for getting around the blocks.
Recently, spammers have been using viruses to take control of millions of home and business computers so that they can spam from millions of IP addresses to defeat reputation and volume based blocking methods which have, historically, been the most effective methods of blocking spam.
Having access to these millions of systems from which they can send spam has also allowed them to send approximately twice as much spam per day than they could just six months ago.
One of the best things the general public can do to help reduce the amount of spam on the Internet is keep the operating system of their computers updated and use anti-virus, and anti-spyware software at all times. We currently recommend, and sell, McAfee Anti-Virus and Webroot Spy Sweeper software products to protect Windows based computers.
If your computer is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME, you need to upgrade to Windows XP with service pack 2, or some other operating system which was released within the past two years. Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME have problems which will never be fixed. These problems make it especially easy for spammers to take control of computers running those operating systems.
The Computer Works computer store can assist you with purchasing upgrades to your operating system, anti-virus, anti-spyware and, if necessary, computer.
Spam Firewall Quarantine Server
Remember to use your full e-mail address as the username and the password which what sent to you when your quarrantine account was automatically created. Your usual tcworks.net username and password will not work, unless you have already changed your password to be the same as your e-mail password. You do have the option of changing the quarantine account password to match your e-mail password once you log into the system.
